SFDA update for cosmetics and personal care products

  • 9/8/2021

The SFDA updated its mandatory safety requirements for cosmetics and personal care products with immediate effect.

The Saudi Food and Drugs Authority (SFDA) has updated its mandatory safety requirements for cosmetic and personal care products. SFDA has adopted the new version of the GSO 1943:2021 with immediate effect after its issuance on the 1st of July 2021.

Of note, the GSO 1943 regulation outlines the mandatory safety standards for cosmetics and personal care products. The update reviews several factors including the general safety limit for mercury, which has been lowered from 3ppm to 1ppm.

In addition, GSO 1943 annexes are now a dynamic link to European annexes. As a result, any update to the EU annexes will also immediately apply to the Saudi annexes. For more information on the relevant European standards, you can check here.

However, it is to be noted that Saudi included 4 additional entries to annex 3 such as Vitamin A restrictions.

As a trusted partner of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Cotecna is now conducting shipment assessments and issuing Certificates of Conformity based on this update.
