As of 20th December 2020, safety standards for Information Technology Equipment (IEC 60950-1) and Audio Equipment (IEC 60065) will be replaced by a new hazard-based standard (IEC 62368-1). Find out more to ensure your products are compliant.
The current traditional safety standards for Information Technology Equipment (IEC 60950-1) and Audio/Video Equipment (IEC 60065) will be replaced by a single safety standard – IEC 62368-1 which is drew on Hazard-Based Safety Engineering (HBSE) principles.
This new standard will be put in place by the Technical Committee TC 108, which is responsible in developing safety Standards for electronic devices in the areas of audio/video, information technology and communication technology.
The scope of this new standard is wide as it will cover all the different products that were covered by the previous IEC 60950 1 and IEC 60065 standards. New terminologies are introduced such as ‘energy sources’ and ‘safeguard’ to align with HBSE concepts.
With the standard IEC 62368-1, energy sources will be identified and categorized into 3 categories based on effects on body and on combustible material:
|Classes||Effect on body||Effect on combustible material|
|Class 1||Not painful but may be detectable||Ignition not likely|
|Class 2||Painful but not an injury||Ignition possible|
|Class 3||Injury||Ignition likely|
This new standard has specific requirements therefore, Cotecna can accompany you in meeting the right compliance criteria before the implementation date of 20th December 2020.
