SFDA has updated the permitted use of Methyl N-Methylanthranilate (MNM) in cosmetic products. The update will be effective from the 1st of July 2023.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has updated the permitted use of Methyl N-Methylanthranilate (MNM) in cosmetic products. Methyl N-Methylanthranilate is an ingredient used to fragrance cosmetics like make up, perfumes, shampoos, soaps and so on.

SFDA Circular 24366 states the following:

  • A maximum limit of 0.2% MNM is permitted in rinseable (rinse-off) cosmetic products.
  • MNM must not be used with nitrosating agents such as diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA).
  • The permitted acceptable limit for nitrosamine content is 50g/kg.
  • Cosmetic products containing MNM must be stored in nitrite-free containers.

The update will be effective from the 1st of July 2023. According to the regulatory authority, the new MNM restrictions are based on the latest available evidence and studies. Manufacturers, warehouse managers and importers of cosmetic products are expected to comply with the update.
