Latest SFDA Update on Azelaic Acid

  • 5/22/2023

SFDA has released updated circular for Azelaic Acid usage that is effective from 14th May 2023.

On 14th May 2023, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has issued an updated circular regarding the use of Azelaic Acid in cosmetic products. This update comes after a series of recent studies have shown that Azelaic Acid can be used safely in cosmetic products up to a certain percentage.

Therefore, after reviewing these recent studies SFDA has decided to update the allowed limit of Azelaic Acid to a maximum of 15% in all cosmetic products as of 14th May 2023.

It is important to note that the updated circular is in accordance with the Cosmetic Products System issued by Royal Decree No. M / 49 dated 6/18/1436 AH and its executive regulations and references the circular issued No. 24367 / p dated 1442 / 26/8H, which includes restricting the use of azelaic acid in cosmetic products.

The cosmetic products industry is a highly regulated sector in Saudi Arabia, and SFDA is responsible for ensuring that all cosmetic products comply with the regulations and are safe for consumers to use.

At Cotecna, we take the safety of cosmetic products seriously and support SFDA's efforts to ensure the safety of consumers. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of Azelaic Acid in your cosmetic products, don’t hesitate to contact us.
